Univision cuts ties with Miss Universe over Donald Trump’s ‘insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants’
The news just keeps getting worse for Donald Trump and his Miss Universe organization. On Thursday, Univision ended its partnership with the pageant system over remarks Trump made last week about Mexico.
The news follows an announcement by Colombian singer J Balvin that he has decided not to perform at the Miss USA pageant next month – Trump co-owns both Miss USA and Miss Universe – over those same remarks by the new Republican presidential candidate.
Among other things, Trump said last week that he wants to build a “great wall” between the U.S. and Mexico and make Mexico pay for it.
“Today, the entertainment division of Univision Communications Inc. announced that it is ending the Company’s business relationship with the Miss Universe Organization, which is part-owned by Donald J. Trump, based on his recent, insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants,” the company said in a statement.
“At Univision, we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country. We will not be airing the Miss USA pageant on July 12th or working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization.”
Univision News and its local news division “will continue to provide comprehensive coverage of all candidates, including Mr. Trump, to ensure our audience continues to have access to all points of view,” according to the statement.
In response, Trump sent out a series of tweets claiming that he wasn’t talking about Mexican immigrants but was referring to U.S. trade deals with the country.
“I love Mexico,” he tweeted.
Univision wants to back out of signed @MissUniverse contract because I exposed the terrible trade deals that the U.S. makes with Mexico.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 25, 2015I love Mexico but not the unfair trade deals that the US so stupidly makes with them. Really bad for US jobs, only good for Mexico.
