Why use Community Chats?
Community Chats transforms static comment threads into dynamic, low-latency hubs. It is perfect for:
- Live Events & Match Threads: Share instant reactions and play-by-play discussions without needing to refresh the page.
- Rich Interactive Experience: Keep users engaged during live events with inline image uploads and instant emoji reactions, making the conversation feel truly alive.
- AMAs & Breaking News: Foster real-time commentary and fast-paced engagement.
- Boosting Engagement: Lower the barrier to entry for new community members with a casual, low-friction environment.
How to Use (as a Moderator)
Create a Chat Thread
- Go to your subreddit.
- Tap the three dots menu (more options) in the top bar.
- Select Create Chat to open the chat form and start a new thread.
Built with Moderators in Mind
Community Chats is designed with moderation at its core, leveraging the native Devvit platform to provide a secure and manageable environment for subreddits of any size.
- AutoModerator Compatibility: Every chat message is automatically posted as a native Reddit comment under the hood. This means all your existing AutoModerator rules, crowd control settings, and subreddit safety filters apply instantly to the chat, drastically reducing the manual moderation burden.
- Seamless Native Integration: No external accounts or third-party apps required. It operates completely within Reddit's ecosystem.
- Controlled Chat Creation: Only moderators can create new Chat threads via the subreddit menu. You maintain full control over the narrative and context.
In-Chat Reporting
Any user can report a message by tapping the message and selecting the red flag icon. Reports are collected in an in-app Mod Queue panel, visible only to moderators, showing the reported message, the number of reporters, and timestamps.
Mod Queue Actions
From the Mod Queue, moderators can take the following actions on each report:
- Dismiss — Clears the report without penalizing the user.
- Delete — Removes the message from the chat and deletes the underlying Reddit comment.
- Ban from Chat — Prevents the user from sending messages in this chat while leaving them able to participate in the rest of the subreddit. The ban is enforced across all devices in real time.
- Ban from Subreddit — Permanently bans the user from the entire subreddit via Reddit's native ban system with a reason of "Chat violation".
Additional Moderation Controls
- Lock Chat — Toggle to make the chat read-only for non-moderators. Perfect for slowing down conversation or ending an event.
- Message Cooldown — Set a required delay (15s, 30s, or 60s) between messages for non-moderators to prevent spam.
- Disable Images — Toggle to prevent image attachments in messages.
- Pin Messages — Pin an important message to the top of the chat for visibility.
- Delete Messages — Remove any individual message from the chat with an undo-safe confirmation prompt.
- Minimum Karma — Set a minimum karma threshold that users must meet to participate in the chat. Applies to everyone including moderators.
- Minimum Account Age — Set a minimum account age (in days) that users must meet to participate in the chat. Applies to everyone including moderators.
