This page documents the existence of the Wikimedia movement in Indonesia: the world's largest island country, the 14th-largest country by land area, and world's fourth-most populous country.

Major entities within the Wikimedia movement in Indonesia are the projects, affiliate, and like-minded partner organizations.

Languages

Indonesia has more than 700 local languages. Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) is the national language.

As of May 2024, there are 18 languages of Indonesia that has at least one Wikimedia project.

  • Indonesian (id): Indonesian is spoken in neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Brunei, Timor Leste, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, etc. as well.
  • Javanese (jv): spoken in Indonesia and Suriname.
    • Banyumasan Javanese (map-bms): regarded as a dialect of Javanese, thus it doesn't have its own language code.

  • Banjar (bjn)
  • Acehnese (ace)
  • Minangkabau (min)
  • Gorontalo (gor)
  • Balinese (ban)
  • Madurese (mad)

  • Malay (ms): at that time, the language code (ms) was regarded as separate language, but now it is regarded as a macrolanguage (LoC) or nuclear family (Glottolog). The Open Indonesia Coalition (Koalisi Open Indonesia) is a coalition of several organizations championing the Open movement in Indonesia. This coalition was initiated by the first Open Indonesia Forum held in Bandung on June 16–17, 2026, which meeting produced an Open Movement Roadmap for Indonesia. In January 2026, the coalition produced its inaugural manifesto. Wikimedia Indonesia serves as one of the founding members and current host of the coalition's secretariat, which includes the following organization as members:
