Birds only

All posts must be about birds

Note: This says "posts", NOT "comments". Comments should be relevant to whatever they are a reply to. Top level comments should be relevant to the post.

Be nice / Family friendly

Posts & comments should avoid swears or obscene language.
Adults can disagree without being mean.
Anger never changes minds, especially online.
If you can't contribute without being nice then don't.

Don't feed bad behavior with more bad behavior. "They did it first" is not an excuse for breaking this rule; click "report" on the comment, don't respond in kind.

Note: Legitimate scientific, academic, or naturalist related discussion of bird breeding, mating, and related topics, is allowed.

Non-commercial

No advertising or commercial posts.

Do not offer to sell anything or ask for money.

Discussion or asking about topics involving buying is okay, such as asking for recommendations for bird food, discussing a vet bill, etc.

No harassment / incivility

No harassment, incivility or bad behavior of any kind. Do not directly insult other participants. If you don't like something report it.

Use NSFW for images of hurt birds

Any posts with images of injured, sick, or dead birds must use the reddit NSFW label.

Also add the reddit NSFW label for images of mistreatement of birds, or that are likely to be seen as mistreatment.

Cite visual sources

Any post of an image or video that is not your own must cite and ideally link to the source. If it's yours but that's not clear from the title or context, say it directly in the post text or add a comment right after you post. This includes comics and similar: Link to the original, or the creator's web site, or clearly say that you made it.

Don't say "OC", not everyone knows what that means. Use words.

Flair does not count as a citation of the source.

Do not take credit for others' works.

There are some more specific subreddits about bird-related topics and we encourage you to post there when your post fits the more specific forum; /r/birds is for everything they don't cover.

We welcome:

Articles about birds
Bird art
Questions and discussions about birds
Questions and discussions about bird feeders
Bird photography
Science of birds
Links to media about birds

Read the rules before posting! In brief: Post must be about birds, avoid cursing or adult-only language, no selling or commercial advertising, give the source of any art or photos, and use NSFW for injured/sick/dead birds.

Please don't message the mods asking if your post breaks the rules, if your post does not break the rules written at that link; you will not be banned for breaking secret unwritten rules.

Other subreddits:

/r/birding focuses on birding/birdwatching. It's a great place do show birds you saw on a birding trip or hike, ask about birding equipment and practices, discuss good places to go birdwatching, talk about eBird, and related topics.
/r/birdpics is mainly for posting bird photos that you've taken yourself, and seeing other people's bird photos. /r/birdphotography hosts discussion of and questions about bird photography as well as photos of birds.
/r/whatsthisbird is the reddit for posting pictures of birds you want to identify. If your question is "what kind of bird is this", that's the place to post! When posting to /r/whatsthisbird, always remember to include both the time (date or season) and place (general geographical location) in your post title.
/r/wingspan/ for the awesome, popular board game about birds.
Although we think there should be a separate subreddit for discussions about keeping domesticated / pet birds, /r/petbirds appears to be abandoned at this time. There are subreddits for specific species of birds people commonly keep, so you can search https://www.reddit.com/subreddits for your pet bird's species to see if there's a sub for it.

We do still allow some posts here that might better fit in one of those other subreddits, but consider whether your post more clearly fits into one of those and if so, we encourage you to post there.

A limited number of posts that are not about birds but are about this subreddit will be allowed. Use the "meta" tag for such a post, and search first to make sure it does not repeat the same topic as another meta post in the past few months. Meta posts will be limited so that they aren't too frequent, so not every meta post will be allowed.
