"The member of Tehran is League of Historical Cities"

Hi, I wanted to use f:Z36218 in Q3616 to take the property "member of", but I get the sentence above. Instead, I would expect something like "Tehran is a member of the League of Historical Cities" Mastrocom (talk) 14:20, 8 August 2026 (UTC)

PS: Can you suggest me some functions for past tence? Learning how to help with Abstract Wikipedia and Wikifunctions

Hi 99of9,

I hope you are doing well.

I really admire the thought and care you and the community have put into Wikifunctions and Abstract Wikipedia. The goal of making knowledge accessible to everyone in their own language is something I care deeply about, and I would love to help.

I am a software developer and want to contribute my time to writing code, building functions, and helping wherever I can. Because this project is built on careful community consensus and good design, I want to start with humility listening and learning your norms first so that any work I do is truly helpful and well-aligned.

When you have a moment, could you share a bit of guidance on:

• Where is help most needed right now? Which parts of the project would benefit most from developer attention?
• What should I read first? Are there key guidelines, design discussions, or rules I should understand before proposing new functions or constructors?
• Where to start? Where can I find good starter tasks or active workboards (like on Phabricator or on-wiki) to get involved?

What to do:

Your initial test contribution was good. I'd generally encourage continued small-scale testing on both AW and Wikifunctions. (If you really want to look into phabricator tasks, the relevant board is , but personally I wouldn't advise starting there.)

What to read:

I don't really keep track of this, and it sort of depends where you end up contributing. But I would suggest joining the lively Telegram/IRC channel, as that is a great way to get info from the experienced editors.

Where to start on AW:

• Pick a few topics of interest to you, and see if you can develop the articles with the functions available already. For example, I've expanded Q140395521 a bit by calling for data from its Wikidata page. To see what's possible, look around at other similar or well-developed articles (e.g. my test article Q408 is getting pretty big).
• Then figure out what limitations there were:
  • Try switching the "Generated text" language from English to any other language you know. You'll find lots of gaps, default functions, failures, or errors. Some of them will have "call-to-action" links like editing pencils or configuring tools. Click on them and you'll be taken to where you can improve the data on wikidata or the function configuration on Wikifunctions.
  • Write down a simple sentence you would have liked to add but couldn't, and see if you can develop a general abstract structure for that sentence that would work for other sentences and other topics. Suggest that somewhere as a new function. For example, the other day an editor suggested on the Telegram channel "There is some information that is hard to include in Q928. I could not find functions for "X has N Ys"." We should soon start constructing that, because it will be widely useful.

Where to start on WF:

• Try running functions, and see how they work.
• Add tests to functions that you'd like to use. Especially edge-cases or tests that are currently failing.
• Look at how some composition implementations are constructed. Say, for example, you'd like to work on a Hindi implementation for the sentence you added to AW, which currently returns this default. You could look at the functions available in other languages in the Z29843 configuration, look at their implementations, and copy one over to a new Hindi version.
• Look at how your language is represented in the WF natural language directory. For example Hindi is at f:Wikifunctions:Catalogue/Natural_language_operations/Hindi (almost empty).

Where your skills will be needed:

• This is really hard to predict, because there are so many possible interesting tasks. Those of us in the community have all found niches of complementary and overlapping expertise. But as a first guess, if you speak any language other than English, you may immediately one of the main contributors in that language!

Following your advice, I have authored the foundational Hindi function, Python implementation, and test case for state location:

• Function: Z40186 (state location using entity and class, Hindi)
• Python 3 Implementation: Z40188
• Test Case: Z40189 (Test MBPG College in Haldwani)

Could you please review and connect Z40188 and Z40189 to the function when you have a moment?

Also, as I continue building out the Hindi natural language operations catalogue, please let me know if I can be granted the rights to connect implementations directly.

Good work. I've connected them. Notice that the English function f:Z30397 (and all other languages) which is linked from the configuration f:Z29843 takes inputs as QIDs and returns a monolingual text, whereas yours takes strings and returns a string. So I've made a new function f:Z40197 which matches the function signature we need, and I'll now make an implementation of it that wraps your string function. Can you test it out (and add tests) once you see it has an implementation. If it works, we can add it to the configuration.

I tested Z40197!

It works and returns Hindi text. The only minor fix needed is in the composition Z40198: the 'location' input currently maps to '➔ class' instead of '➔ location'. Since the connected implementation is locked for editing, could you please switch that dropdown to '➔ location' when you have a moment?

Yes. He won't block you, but you should still listen to his experience. Basically you should try to concentrate on making a few articles good instead of leaving the improvements to others. It's not easy at the moment, because we are missing a lot of functions you might need, but it is possible.
