Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. Hello Jan.Kamenicek, thanks for helping to translate the 2012 Picture of the Year contest. We still need help translating the contest interface and messages, along with reviewing existing translations. This page contains information about which pages need to be translated (please remember to take a look at all three tables on that page). Your help is really appreciated and helps make the premier competition on the world's largest collection of over 15 million freely licensed files possible.

Hi Jan, in relation to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Eager for education.jpg, I understand you wish for it to be deleted. Can I ask if this is because you are indentifiable in the image? darkweasel94 mentions that the door part of the image could be in scope, and looking at our categories we don't have any other images of this particular door on Commons; so I wanted to ask you if I were to Gaussian blur your face to make you unidentifiable, and change the description accordingly, would you be amenable to keeping the image on this basis? As an admin, I am willing to delete the image if you really wish for it to be deleted as an unused personal image, but at same time will try to make it possible for us to keep such images where they might be a useful purpose. The choice is yours, so please do let me know. Cheers, russavia (talk) 21:54, 11 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have grantedautopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry17:40, 8 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Best in Scope. I think the light in this picture may be better, but your nomination doesn't have the distracting tree in the top left, and is taken from a better angle so you can see the main entrance. Nev1 (talk) 19:01, 21 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Question I can't figure what is this "nature monument"? The sole reference I found is [1], which matches the geocode, but there is little explanation. Could you explain please? Thanks, Yann (talk) 04:04, 30 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
This place used to be a limestone quarry; from this time the terrain bumps come from. After the quarry was abandoned, nature took it back and nowadays there grow variety of plants including some protected species. It is a small area of land (just 0.19 km²) which really differs from its agricultural surroundings, as can be seen on the original picture (this is a cropped version). The area was declared a natural monument of the Czech Republic and put on the IUCN list of protected areas, category IV.

Lepší nikdy nebude, alespoň do té doby, dokud tam nevzniknnou zájmové komunity lidí. Tím pádem by zanikl univerzální správce a vzniklo něco jako akreditace. Když by pak vyloženě otravoval člověk, jež akreditaci nemá, nebral by se jeho názor vážně. Poté by něco vzniklo, takhle se tam budete všichni jenom hádat. --Daniel Holý (talk) 15:30, 12 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
To je náhoda, o žádné předešlé diskusi o kategoriích tohoto typu nevím. Prostě mi přišlo užitečné oddělit kategorie "historie města", která může zahrnovat např. též současné fotografie různých historických artefaktů, od "historických fotografií". Jan Kameníček (talk) 22:11, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
It is just a coincidence, I do not know about any discussion on categories of that type. I have just found it useful to separate the category of the "history of the city", which can include e. g. current photographs of various historical artefacts, and the category "historical images".

Thanks for your amendment. Yes, I do understand that Czechoslovakia may not be the right description for the (incorrectly presumed by me) territory but what is? If all the variations around the world are taken into account we will have an enormous number of country categories, or am I unnecessarily alarmed? The drawing represents a coach in a particular time but can we not tie it to a place, even to a place of authorship? I'd like to know that because it seems to have a distinctive style and I am writing about the history of coaches. Eddaido (talk) 22:02, 14 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi. I do not think it should be tied to the place of the authorship of the Otto's Encyclopaedia from which the picture comes from. It would be best if it could be tied to the region where such coaches where really used, but as the article in the encyclopaedia does not say it, I am not able to say it either. I guess similar types were used in more countries across Europe, it seems quite similar e.g. to File:Rolka_Sztokholmska_6.JPG. If we are not able to tie it to a specific region, it would probably be best to leave it in the general category. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 23:33, 14 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I noticed that your file File:Úvaha posl. P. Wurma o narovnání s Uhry.pdf did not have an OCR layer and I managed to make an file from the same source that does have an OCR layer, has slightly bigger resolution, bigger file size (4MB) and does not have those white borders to the left and right. May I overwrite your file ? Those white borders caused the file not to be OCR-able.--Snaevar (talk) 21:13, 5 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hallo Jan.Kamenicek you restore the Category:Historical undivided back postcards. I try to delete this category, because I think we don't need this category any more. In the last days I sort and order the categories under postcards. Now there is a little bit more structure in this categories. When I first saw this category I don't understand what is the reason for this cat. After same research I create this structur:
So we can sort all images of postcard without problem. Also I don't like the word "historical" in the cat-name, because all postcards "historical". Did you agree that we can now delete the old "Category:Historical undivided back postcards"? Best regards -- sk (talk) 09:02, 29 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
As for the word "historical": I understand your objection about this word, but if we omit it, people may start adding also some modern postcards which simply do not have divided back (I saw some modern postcards without divided back in the past), so I thought it better to add this word to avoid confusion. But if you think it is redundant, we can omit this word. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 12:15, 29 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Some Introductory Historical Observations.pdf. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.
Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

I think you should help to point commons artists to ws, not hurt the attempts of others. There are lots of books and maybe some will transcribe also.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 19:46, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Regardless of the recent controversy, I generally also value your work very high. As for the rest, I have answered at my talk page at Wikisource. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 21:29, 5 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jan.Kamenicek, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all occurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
This is a deletion request for the community to discuss whether the nominated page should be kept or deleted. Please voice your opinion in the linked request above. Thank you very much!
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, and one or more administrators has reviewed and granted this request.
Request reason: "I would like to request granting the IP block exemption right. From time to time it happens to me that the IP from which I log in to Commons has been blocked as a part of some range block, and so granting IP block exemption right would make things easier for me. I think I can be considered a trustworthy user, with long history of contributing, thousands of uploaded files, and no problematic record. I am also an English Wikisource admin and I have already been granted the IP block exemption right in Czech Wikipedia and in Wikidata. Thanks very much. @Jeff G.: Oh, that is extraordinarily annoying what you have just written. I think that it is quite clear that all the edits mentioned were done in good faith. I omitted the reasons because it seemed superfluous to me as there was a link included that led to the subpage containing the reasons. I admit that it was a mistake and I should repeat the reasons there, but there was no bad faith in it and giving me such a "warning" and threatening me with blocks for a mistake is just upsetting. And your insinuation about me not being willing to follow our procedures is just completely beside the point. Please, next time think twice before wording your messages. Thanks for understanding. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 09:53, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Jeff G.: Yes, I do feel offended. I contribute to several wiki projects and each of them has different rules. It is quite common that some projects, such as en.ws, just link to the deletion discussion where everything is explained. I cannot agree with your attitude that after first mistake (and after really many contributions here), when I did not realize that the rules are different here, you threatened me with blocking my account. And now, to make it worse, you keep offending me by comparing me with some cases of permanent and deliberate abuse. I do not think I need to read anything more of you. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 17:53, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

I have an image with the author's permission—he sent it to me and authorized me to use it.
They're two, sent via WhatsApp. What's the best way to publish them?

2023 Picture of the Year: Incense plays an important role in Vietnamese life. It is considered as a sacred bridge to connect the visible life of human beings and the world of heaven, earth, and gods. Hi Jan and definitely apologies. My puzzle is why the file is in the speedy delete category but has no actual tag on it??? I saw it in the category, it was a book (they are usually copyrighted) and I deleted it. However I was wrong but I can't work out why it's in the category (and it still is). I'm guessing there's a template somewhere that is not working properly. I'll try and track it down though. Herbytalk thyme11:41, 11 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
No problem, mistakes happen. I also wonder why it has appeared in that category. A while ago I also noticed that I had mistagged it as PD-US-no notice instead of PD-US-not renewed, but correcting that has not solved the issue. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 11:53, 11 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think it was the redirect that caused the issue - I deleted that and the problem seems to have gone away. Some of the template bits are really quite hard to understand (to me!). Best Herbytalk thyme11:58, 11 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

I ran it through the newer Wikimedia OCR to add in the text. I have been redoing my older uploads to get better transcription and came across yours in the category. RAN (talk) 02:45, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
From my point of view it is quite redundant: While Commons gathers files, Wikisource hosts transcriptions. There is not much use of having the same texts in several Wikimedia projects. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 08:06, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!
Latest comment: 5 months ago1 comment1 person in discussion
Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
