Onboarding to Documentation team

Here is some quick info you need in order to start contributing to Documentation team.

Accounts:

Places:

  • Blog – for meeting agendas and summaries (and anything related to Docs team).
  • Slack channel #docs – where meetings are happening (and all communication regarding the team itself).
  • GitHub repository – where issues for all documentation are reported, discussed and worked on.
  • Handbook – how to contribute to the Documentation team (it’s a bit out of date).
  • Style guide – for how to write WordPress documentation.

Meetings (alternating every week) on Tuesdays at 2PM UTC:

  • Regular meeting with agenda published on our blog.
  • Issues triage where we discuss issues from the GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. Live onboarding sessions

We recorded onboarding sessions for everyone interested in getting started with the Documentation team. We know that our “Getting started” documentation is out of date and getting involved can be very confusing and frustrating so we hope to ease the process with these sessions.

7.0 Documentation Overhaul

Some WCEU Contributor Day attendees worked on the 7.0 docs review; comments may be coming in. At least one blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. article page has outdated screenshots — not yet confirmed which one or whether an issue has been filed. @estelaris plans to focus entirely on the overhaul (writing/testing/updating) next week, with a goal of making progress before 7.1. WP Credits students will be asked to help review/test/validate updated block articles.

Open Questions

@kjoyner raised several questions:

  • Videos are auto-converting to VideoPress on upload — is this expected/recent?
    • Estela and Velda will look into this.
  • Should the show_in_rest suggestion for custom post types in the Query LoopLoop The Loop is PHP code used by WordPress to display posts. Using The Loop, WordPress processes each post to be displayed on the current page, and formats it according to how it matches specified criteria within The Loop tags. Any HTML or PHP code in the Loop will be processed on each post. https://codex.wordpress.org/The_Loop block be included in HelpHub docs? (Currently noted in issue #1424)
    • Estela says let’s not add to HelpHub.
  • Should items in lists have periods at the end?
    • We usually add a period at the end of any sentences in lists, but not to sentence fragments.
  • Inconsistency in how the Block Inserter “(+)” is referenced across docs — the style guide suggests dropping “the” and “button” and just using “click XYZ”

Translations / Roadmap

@supernovia flagged interesting info from a WCEU Q&A session about translations. @estelaris needs to write a clear roadmap first, and have Mary and Matias review it before sharing more widely.

WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. US (August 16–19)

@supernovia plans to attend and asked if a docs table is needed. @clk87 is also expected to attend; plan is to divide efforts across tables where students can help. @estelaris is unsure about traveling to the US but can provide instructions remotely. @awetz583 and @supernovia both noted they’ll have some vacation around 7.1 RC1 timeframe; @awetz583 expects to be back around August 11.

Action Items

  • @supernovia — Write up meeting notes & look into VideoPress conversions
  • @estelaris — Write WCEU summary + proposals/roadmap for next year; coordinate with Mary and Matias on translations roadmap
  • @awetz583 — Catch up on 7.0 documentation feedback from WCEU later this week
  • Everyone — Keep an eye out for WCEU Contributor Day comments on block article issues

Props to @awetz583 and @estelaris for reviewing these notes!

Welcome Estela as a team rep

If you attended any Documentation team meeting in the past few years, you already met her. If you asked any question in #docs SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/ channel, there’s a high chance she gave you the answer. If you wanted to start contributing to the Docs team, she has probably onboarded you.

Estela has been an integral part of the Documentation team for years. She created and maintained collaboration with many other teams, she made sure the WordPress documentation is now at documentation.wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ subdomain, she documented WordPress releases and did many, many other things for the team and documentation.

We are extremely happy that she accepted our proposal to join the co-rep position for the Documentation team, and welcome her with open arms and hearts.

Important changes to the documentation articles

WordPress versions

The WordPress Versions page has been revamped to improve access to information and ease its maintenance.

Changes

  1. The version order has been changed from ascending to descending, so the newest versions now appear at the top of the list.
  2. Due to the size of the file, the page has been split into two pages:
    1. WordPress Versions – starting at 5.0, this page will continue to house future releases.
    2. WordPress Versions 0.7 to 4.9 – contains the oldest versions of WordPress, maintained for historical purposes.

The WordPress version changelog has also changed as of WordPress release 7.0: the list of wordpress packages is no longer specifically updated for each release. Instead, each release will include a note with more information where available.

BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. article advanced settings update

The Advanced Settings section on individual block pages now links to a page of shared advanced settings to improve maintainability. Block-specific settings will continue to appear on their respective block pages. See issue #2287.

Props to @awetz583 and @supernovia for reviewing and editing this post.
