Tangential Angle

The tangential angle phi of an oriented regular plane curve is a continuous choice of angle of its tangent measured from the positive x-axis. At points with nonzero curvature, it satisfies

 rho|dphi|=ds,
(1)

where s is the arc length and rho is the radius of curvature. With signed curvature kappa(t), the tangential angle is given by

 phi(t)=phi(0)+int_0^ts^'(u)kappa(u)du,
(2)

on a regular parameter interval containing 0. For a plane curve r(t), the tangential angle phi(t) can also be defined by

 (r^'(t))/(||r^'(t)||)=[cos[phi(t)]; sin[phi(t)]].
(3)

Gray (1997) calls phi the turning angle instead of the tangential angle.
