Council Bin Services
Derry City and Strabane District Council operates a bin collection service to over 60,000 households, across the District. There are four main bin collection services offered, across two operating Depots (Skeoge and Strahans Road).
The services operate at various frequencies covering a Monday to Friday schedule, as follows:
Black Bin (General Household Waste) and Blue Bin (Mixed Dry Recycling), fortnightly on alternate weeks;
Brown Wheelie Bin (Mixed Garden and Food Waste) according to collection schedule (either on a Black or Blue bin week) and Brown Food Caddy (weekly).
Our Refuse collection crews work as efficiently as possible, in all weathers, throughout the year to deliver a quality service to all our residents.
Brown Bin​
Residents in the Derry and Strabane Council area are asked to recycle food and garden waste in their big brown wheelie bin. Food waste must continue to be bagged in compostable liners and should go out on the normal garden waste collection day. Our teams will be notifying all affected households.
Areas without the brown wheelie bin should continue to recycle food waste using their caddies.
Derry City and Strabane District Council are now rolling out brown wheelie bins to households within the Council area.Â
This scheme is part of Council’s drive to increase recycling rates across the district. Such waste is turned into compost which is used in local parks, gardens and cemeteries. This saves food waste going to landfill which is good for the environment, reducing harmful emissions and it saves money which can be spent on other local services and events.
Collections take place every fortnight on the same day as the normal black/blue bin collections (depending on area) except for a small number of areas who will receive their collection on a different day.
Large Brown Wheelie Bin Collection Schedule.
If you have a large brown wheelie bin with a mixed food and garden waste service please refer to the info graphic below

You can recycle all your organic garden waste with your food waste in your brown wheelie bin. Please place all your garden waste loosely in your bin. Do not bag it.
Residents in the Derry area with large garden waste bins can now also recycle food waste in their big brown wheelie bin. Food waste must continue to be bagged in compostable liners and should go out on the normal garden waste collection day. Our teams will be notifying all affected households.
Areas without garden waste bins should continue to recycle food waste using their caddies.
Blue Bin
Your blue wheelie bin is for recycling material. This helps your Council make savings on disposing of waste which means we can do more for you and your family, as well as helping the environment, through saving energy and reducing pollution. Blue bin waste is sorted at a materials recovery facility prior to transportation to end the need for further reprocessing.

- Check the day your bin will be collected on our Bin collection calendar.
- On the day of refuse collection you should wheel your bin to the edge of the kerb convenient to where the vehicle usually stops.
- Please leave the bin with the handles facing the road.
- This should be done as early as possible on the day of the collection and not later than 7:00 am.
- The wheeled bin has sufficient capacity and this should mean that there should be no need for additional waste to be placed with the bin during weekly collection.
- Only place acceptable material into the blue bin.
- If you cannot easily move the bin it is unreasonable to expect the collector to do so.
- If you experience any difficulty or problem with the service provided, you should contact us on 028 7137 4107 to register your problem or complaint so that the appropriate action is taken.
- Paper: newspaper, magazines, brochures, catalogues, phone books, Christmas cards, greeting cards, envelopes, brown paper, flyers, junk mail, envelopes, hardback and paperback books, office paper, disposable paper plates.
- Cardboard / Light Card: all cardboard boxes and card packaging including cereal boxes, kitchen / toilet rolls ends, etc.
- Cans and Tins: food and drinks cans – please wash out.
- Aerosols: empty hair spray, air fresheners, body sprays etc.
- Plastic Bottles: plastic milk, juice and soft drink bottles, washing–up liquid bottles, shampoo bottles, medicine bottles, bleach bottles, detergent bottles, household cleaner bottles, ketchup bottles, sauce bottles, bottle tops, plastic jar lids etc.
- Cartons: drinks cartons, soups, milk – please wash out.
- Plastic Containers: butter, margarine, yogurt pots, food trays, takeaway containers, disposable cups, plastic egg cartons – please wash out.
- Mixed Glass: wine, beer, spirit bottles, jam, coffee jars, glass sauce, medicine, perfume, aftershave bottles. All glass bottles and jars must be empty and rinsed out. Lids can be left on. Broken bottles and jars.
- Metal Bottle Tops – metal bottle tops and jar lids
- Plastic BagsÂ

- Household Batteries: AA, AAA etc… Â
- No Car / auto Batteries etc.

Recycling bins will not be emptied if they contain unacceptable refuse as detailed above. It is the householders responsibility to ensure that bins are compliant.

Black Bin
The black wheelie bin is for general, non-recycable waste. It can be used to dispose of general household waste that is not allowed in either the Blue or Brown Bins.
Waste from the black bin typically goes to landfill which is expensive and has an impact on the environment, so Council encourage people to recycle as much as possible using our Blue Bin recycling service or Brown Bin/Caddy food waste collection service.

- Please leave the bin with the handles facing the road.
- This should be done as early as possible on the day of the collection and not later than 7.00 am.
- The wheeled bin has sufficient capacity and this should mean that there should be no need for additional waste to be placed with the bin during weekly collection.
- Do not deposit such materials as stones, concrete, trees, clays or car engines in the bin (all of which have been found in wheeled bins recently), as these damage the mechanism of the collection vehicle.
- If you cannot easily move the bin it is unreasonable to expect the collector to do so.
- If you experience any difficulty or problem with the service provided, you should contact us on 028 7137 4107 to register your problem or complaint so that the appropriate action is taken.

Important Information
- Make sure your Large Brown Bin or food waste caddy is out for collection by 7:00 am on your collection day and can be seen.
- Remember to keep good hygiene by washing the bin.
- If you need more brown bin bags leave a note for our collection staff e.g. by tying on a remaining bag around bin handle, Alternatively, give us a call – 02871374107.

- Meat and fish-raw and cooked including bones

- All dairy products (cheese, yoghurt, etc)
- Eggs
- Bread, cakes and pastries
- Rice, pasta and beans
- Uneaten food from your plates and dishes
- Tea bags and coffee grounds
Please do not put any of these materials in your Caddy or large brown bin
