Saudade

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saudade (English: /ˌsˈdɑːdə/,[1] European Portuguese: [sɐwˈðaðɨ], Brazilian Portuguese: [sawˈdad(ʒ)i], Galician: [sawˈðaðɪ]; plural saudades)[2] is a word Brazilians use to describe a deep emotional state of nostalgic melancholy occurring when one thinks about something or someone that one cares for, cared for, loves, or loved. Saudade often occurs due to someone thinking about something happy, sad or angry from their childhood. It can also bring someone good memories and comfort.

Saudade is a Galician-Portuguese word that claims no direct translation to English or other languages, and is difficult to explain. Saudade is slightly similar to, although not at all the same thing as, nostalgia, though combining sadness and a sense of happiness at the same time.
