tvOS is an operating system created by Apple for their TV products, based around macOS for their first generation Apple TV's, and Later iOS.[3]

The 2nd and 3rd generations did not support third party applications.

Apple announced the 4th generation Apple TV in September 2015, alongside support for third party apps, they also announced the name change from "Apple TV" to the current "tvOS".

The current latest version is tvOS 26, having been released in September 15, 2025.
