  • Meet the Makers: Tawapa

Phoebe Minona’s Tawapa is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, but the company is still having new firsts. From its start as an early vendor of bone and horn jewelry to now pushing technical boundaries with its first-ever titanium line, Tawapa has always tried to stay one step ahead. Leveraging a decades long passion for jewelry, a background in cultural anthropology, and boundless creativity, Phoebe hints that she’s far from finished taking Tawapa — and body jewelry — to new places.

I talked to Phoebe about Tawapa’s new titanium line, her design process, and her journey into the body jewelry industry.

  • “A Body to Live In” Director Angelo Madsen on Documenting Fakir Musafar’s Legacy

Fakir Musafar is so integral to recent body modification history that he’s hard to escape. From performing at the first-ever international tattoo convention, to his involvement with Jim Ward and The Gauntlet, to his filmed suspension in Dances Sacred and Profane, Fakir’s seeming omnipresence in the latter half of the 20th century has made him mythical. But as A Body to Live In by director Angelo Madsen emphasizes, Fakir was not the legend to which he’s often reduced, rather a multifaceted, complex person who shepherded a movement he believed in.

I talked to Madsen about his use of archival materials, the enigma of Fakir’s seeming self-contradiction, and his approach to portraying the life of such a revered figure.

  • Meet the Makers: Hialeah Fine Jewelry

Lanie Ferrans, founder of Hialeah Fine Jewelry, can’t get enough of what she does. On top of 12-to-15-hour days at the bench — sandwiched between getting her eldest son ready for school and making it back in time for dinner — she reads about jewelry history in the snatches of free time she finds.

It’s hard not to understand Hialeah’s success after talking to Ferrans. After struggling to find the things she wanted from existing body jewelry lines, she decided to start making them, and quickly focused on chains, which were becoming a popular addition to ear projects. Eventually, Hialeah grew enough to allow Ferrans to leave the piercing shop she worked at. Later, her husband did the same for his corporate career. Now, he’s the administrative complement to Ferrans’ artistic passion — she’s a self-described hurricane — and Hialeah is the go-to for chains, charms, and tassels, from the minimalist to the very maximalist.

I talked to Ferrans about her upcoming mixed metals collection, how she balances business and family, and her drive to keep growing as a designer and artisan, even when she’s short on time.

  • Meet the Makers: Mettle & Silver

New Orleans-based goldsmithing duo Seth and Monique do just about everything in-house, by hand for Mettle & Silver’s bold, mostly one-of-a-kind pieces. Centering unique stones and fine detail, their work includes both traditional fine jewelry and body jewelry.

I talked to Seth and Monique about their approach to making new pieces and their accidental journey to running a body jewelry company.

  • Meet the Makers: Regalia Jewelry

Regalia Jewelry founder Derrick Edward R. started the company with the same rebellious outlook that drives many of us to body modification in the first place. Ten years in, his urge to do things differently has helped Regalia find its niche as an early adopter of computer-aided design and, now, augmented reality sculpting.

I talked to Derrick about how Regalia got started, his experience learning AR sculpting, and what he sees in the future for the company.
