Ordinary chondrite, impact melt breccia (LL6; S4; W2)
Find, 1938; 11 kg, 2 stones
A 3 kg meteoritic stone was found near Bison in 1958. This discovery prompted the recognition that an even larger stone recovered in 1938 was a fragment of the same fall. Hand specimens reveal a brecciated texture with many rounded clasts (up to 3.5 mm) in a dark chondritic host. Chondrules [POP, PP, RP and BO] within the matrix vary in size (0.1โ1.5 mm). Olivine (Fa~30) and orthopyroxene (Fs~25 ) dominate both chondrules and matrix. Clear grains of albitic feldspar (plagioclase) and lesser amounts of accessory chromite and diopside are present. Tiny grains of sporadically distributed Fe-Ni metal and troilite are observed as well. The clasts include dark clasts (up to 3 cm in section) with relic chondrules and lighter, smaller clasts (< 1 cm) which lack chondrules. Shock-blackened matrix, planar fractures and mosaicism in olivine plus undulose extinction in plagioclase are indicative of moderately strong shock (S4 level). The olivine and orthopyroxene in the host matrix seem well-equilibrated in a manner consistent with its formal type LL6 classification. However, components within the clasts are not fully equilibrated with the host matrix suggesting to some that violent heat-producing shock has partially melted some components and that, perhaps, the meteorite should be classified simply as an 'LL impact melt breccia.'
The LL (very low in total iron) ordinary chondrites are the smallest of the three main geochemical groups of ordinary chondrites and account for ~10% of witnessed meteorite falls. The 'well-equilibrated' LL6 type account for approximately half of all LL ordinary chondrites. The largest masses have been retained at the Naturhistorisches Museum in Wiens and the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa (1โ2 kg range).
