About Graphite
A natural form of elemental carbon, it is also the most stable form under natural conditions.
Unlike diamond, the other major natural form of carbon, graphite is formed from sheets of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal grid, with only weak bonds between the layers, making graphite a very soft material as these layers are easy to part.

Graphite in History
Graphite has been used since neolithic times, where it was used in southeastern Europe in a ceramic paint.
A large graphite deposit was discovered in the sixteenth century in Borrowdale, England.

Uses of Graphite
Natural graphite is used for refractories, batteries, steelmaking, brake linings, foundry facings and as a lubricant.
It also used, when powdered and mixed with clay, to produce the "lead" in pencils. About 7% of worldwide production is used this way.

Processing Graphite
Graphite, which can be mined in both open-pit and underground workings, usually need beneficiation before the concentrate is processed further, usually by regrinding and refloating or by acid leaching.
Environmental Concerns
Environmental impacts from graphite mills consist of air pollution including fine particulate exposure of workers and also soil contamination from powder spillages leading to possible contamination of soil.
It is important for workers to restrict their exposure to graphite dust during the mining and processing of graphite.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has set a recommended exposure limit (REL) of TWA 2.5 mg/m3 respirable dust over an 8-hour workday.
