Writing error in Dutch
"Bekijk een voorbeeldilemma voor de schrijver Douglas Adams (Q42)": "voorbeeldilemma" should be "voorbeeld-lemma" (now it looks like it is about a dilemma). But I have no rights to change it. JopkeB (talk) 13:57, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- @JopkeB: Try this page: Translations:Wikidata:Main Page/Get involved/11/nl. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 17:52, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! I made the change on that page, but I think the Main page has to be purged to see the change. JopkeB (talk) 04:32, 15 July 2025 (UTC)
Merci d'avance --Philippe rogez (talk) 08:43, 30 October 2025 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, this wouldn't work well, at least not with the current diptera.org website. The identifier used in the URL, e.g. 268044 for Eristalis Latreille, 1804, only works for the current release/version (6.4). Once Systema Dipterorum v6.5 comes out, the URL with 268044 will point to a different name/record.
- Systema Dipterorum is still a very useful resource (e.g., I've used it a lot on Wikispecies), but putting it on Wikidata isn't very useful (for the limitations I mentioned above).
- However, there is a test/beta edition of Systema Dipterorum—maybe we could use this edition on Wikidata sometime in the future?
- Side note—there is the "Record #", which is a persistent identifier (unlike the ID in the URL), but there is no way to search for or access a record with a particular "Record #", meaning it has less utility. --WrenFalcon (talk) 17:46, 30 October 2025 (UTC)
- Bonjour WrenFalcon : Merci pour le dialogue, la réponse intéressante et les explications détaillées, bonne continuation et bonnes contributions--Philippe rogez (talk) 11:12, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
Spinach Wikidata assistant
The link to the “Spinach Wikidata assistant” takes one to a bad gateway.Trilotat (talk) 00:02, 12 December 2025 (UTC)
- It sometimes had downtimes. Maybe because of more users. It's working again now. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:53, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- It seems to be down for a month or more now (see https://web.archive.org/web/20260000000000*/https://spinach.genie.stanford.edu/). If it doesn't come back up, it should probably be removed from the main page. Volvox (talk) 20:27, 28 September 2026 (UTC)
Number of structured data pages
In the main page we display the number of content pages as if it was the number of items. However, this is false: this number includes not only items, but also properties and lexems. So we presently say that we have "120,268,720 data items" but in fact the items are 118,726,284 (query), + 13,200 properties (query) and 1,512,976 lexemes (query): the total is 120,252,460 which seems congruent with 120,268,720. I have edited into "120,268,720 structured data pages (items, properties, and lexemes)", please feel free to further improve. --Epìdosis 09:32, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- That seems awfully long for a header, can we just choose "entities"? Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 11:16, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- +1, I modified it to only replace items by entities. Mormegil (talk) 13:54, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- Entities is a good solution, thanks! --Epìdosis 15:56, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- +1, I modified it to only replace items by entities. Mormegil (talk) 13:54, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- I think it would be best to just say 118 million items – items are an easier to understand concept and it doesn't need to be perfectly comprehensive to also include properties etc in the number which isn't much higher than just items anyway. Prototyperspective (talk) 11:55, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
Proposal: mainpage improvements

Hi, I’m Elisha Cohen, a UX researcher and designer for one of the Wikidata teams at WMDE. We’ve done an analysis of the Wikidata mainpage as part of a larger project looking at user experience and documentation and would like to share the resulting recommendations with the community. Initially we started looking at how application builders are getting to developer documentation, but along the way noticed improvements that we think would benefit most people landing on the mainpage.
We started a documentation project because research has shown that Wikidata documentation for developers is fragmented and hard to discover.1 2 Since the mainpage is many visitors’ starting point, we thought making improvements here is a good place to have an impact and help direct people to the content that they most need.
Our proposal keeps most of the content as is, but reorganizes some of it and adds extra context. In the suggestion pdf you can see what remains the same (grayed out), what is the same content but in a new location (pink), new content (purple), and removed content (red with strikethrough). These are suggestions and I’m posting it here to put the final decisions in the hands of the community.
The goal of the proposed changes is to make the page more skimmable, so that it’s easier for readers to find what they’re looking for. The key ideas are:
- Group related content so it’s all in one place
- Provide clearer section titles and subtitles
- Give context around a link to make it clear where you’re headed before you click
I’ve also tried to make the two potential newbie pathways a bit easier to find under “Get started”: it’s either (1) contribute to the data or (2) use the data. For both pathways, it’s important to first understand what Wikidata is, so that content is moved to the first box. In addition, I’ve added a few pages that help give additional context, such as the Glossary and the Data model page, as well as links about how to use Wikidata on other Wikimedia projects.
For the footer, I recommend to link to developer content only once and link only to the Wikidata specific page instead of the general Wikimedia portal.
In addition to the above changes, the proposal includes a few updates to wording to match current best practices, such as “knowledge base” to “knowledge graph.”
Thank you for taking the time to review. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! I hope the community agrees that some changes would be beneficial and make the mainpage a bit easier to navigate. Looking forward to seeing where this ends up.

- @Elisha Cohen (WMDE): I like the proposed changes, this seems thoughtfully done. The one thing I noticed was you removed the link to the SPARQL query service - I think we maybe should have one or two lines, maybe a whole section, on how to search Wikidata somewhere on this page. The "Get Started" section maybe should have something on searching? ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:09, 2 November 2026 (UTC)
- These changes all look reasonable to me. I would maybe consider adding some changes to the "More" section of the Discover card, I'm not sure that the second and third bullet points there really earn their place. Nicereddy (talk) 23:45, 2 November 2026 (UTC)
- Good suggestions, thank you. Suggest removing the "items related to current events" entirely. I really don't think they are useful. No one comes to Wikidata to learn about current events. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:16, 3 November 2026 (UTC)
