It really makes me believe that they sit around thinking of ways not just to monetize, but to make the users hate using the site. Why can't we opt out of this, disable it, or set "Following" to default? Because maybe they don't want us using reddit at all? I can't figure it out.

Are your submissions not showing on Reddit?
If you are a new user/trying to submit in a subreddit you have not submitted to before, please take some time to first participate in that subreddit (browse, upvote content/comments etc).
If you have tried the above and your posts still do not show, please contact a moderator in the subreddit where you're having problems. See the FAQ for more information.
The lightbulb icons next to usernames indicate people who have demonstrated a history of providing useful and helpful answers in this subreddit.
Questions posted to r/help must be about reddit's features or culture. For suggestions on where to ask questions unrelated to reddit, please try r/findareddit.
Remember the human, don't post slurs or insults.
Keep suggestions and comments helpful and relevant.
Post or comments complaining/calling out users, subreddits, subreddit policies, moderator actions, or similar content will be removed.
This is not the place to appeal your subreddit ban, shadowban, or reddit suspension. Contact subreddit moderators or use http://www.reddit.com/appeals as appropriate.
Please make your own thread/post in r/help and don't use another users thread to get help with your own problem on Reddit.
Posts that are commonly/were recently posted to the subreddit may be removed at the discretion of the moderation team. Please search before posting and if you find a similar recent post, comment and upvote there for better visibility.
